The Top 10 for 2010

Happy New Decade! I'm welcoming 2010 feeling a little bit wiser (and a little bit wider) and very excited about what this new era will hold.

The noughties was a decade of mega-trends in makeup and skincare.

In-between a mind-boggling array of new products promising to shape, shade, extend and enhance, is Rosiecheek's Top 10 for 2010.

A hand-picked list of the most essential performers for your bathroom cabinet in 2010 and beyond. The must-have items which withstood trends of the noughties and will continue to outshine and outperform throughout the next decade, and into the next.

Behold, the first five! Stay tuned for the next installment of Rosiecheek for the rest.

1: BIO-OIL
Bio Oil is the Mother Theresa of skincare - a hard working multitasker working miracles for next to nothing. About a fifth of the price of designer lotions, Bio Oil humbly yet dramatically improves the appearance of aging and dehydrated skin, scars, stretch marks, baby-bellies and uneven skin tone. Apply a small drop to your face before sleep (or sparingly as a body oil) and within about 6 weeks, marvel at the noticeable result. Winner of too many awards to mention, and a must-have item.

2: BLISTEX LIP CONDITIONER
I've trialled just about all basic lip balms suitable for everyday use, from PawPaw Ointment to Chapstick to Burt's Bees to Keihl's and everything in between. Blistex wins every time. A zingy, non-greasy, SPF-friendly cocktail of vitamins, aloe vera and cocoa butter conditions even the driest of lips into ultra-smooth weapons of mass seduction. Wear it on its own, or over a nude lip liner for a polished day-time look.

3. KERASTASE MASQUINTENSE
After years of using a blow dryer and GHD on a daily basis, I should be reported to Amnesty International for torturous crimes against hair. Before discovering Kerastase, my hair was beginning to resemble Kath Day Knight's. Hands down, this is the best deep conditioning hair treatment on the planet. Ultra-rich and packed with proteins, it gives salon results and doesn't weigh hair down. Use this after every shampoo and you'll notice immediate results. It's pricey, but worth every cent.

4. OPI NAIL POLISH IN 'BUBBLE BATH'
Imagine Audrey Hepburn in a beautifully tailored cream suit and Italian heels, poised amongst a gaggle of drunken WAGS in tube dresses and gladiator sandals. This nail polish is Audrey. Understated, clean and the epitome of class. The milky pink sheen gives nails a salon-manicure look, goes with most skin tones and is an anti-dote to the unstoppable landslide of tacky oranges invading our fingers and toes. If I had to pick one nude colour to take to a desert island, this one would be it. (But what I'd do with nail polish on a desert island is another question).

5. BOBBI BROWN SHIMMER BRICK
This product is so good, you will use it every day, every night and possibly in your sleep if you could. My professional kit contains a wide range of bronzers, blushes and shimmer products - from the classic Nars "Orgasm" to MAC, 2GLO, Benefit, Napoleon and KIT - but Bobbi's Shimmer Brick is the product continually singled out, especially by brides who want to look glowing but not 'sparkly'. The brush-on powder creates a very subtle bronze, candlelit or soft pink glow depending on which brick you choose. Brush it onto cheeks, eyes and even lips, across shoulders or lightly over the face for a low-key and pretty effect. The average brick lasts for 18 months (even with daily use), so it's worth the splurge. To my knowledge, there is no greater product of its kind on the market.

Coming soon: the final 5 in the Top 10 for 2010!

Happy New Year!
